BRIDGE TIP OF THE MONTH

By Mark Haberman

TRANSFER BIDS - What message can your transfer bid send?
When transferring over 1NT with a 6 card suit you can do so at the 2 or the 4 level (To transfer at the 4 level is known as a Texas transfer).

The 2 level transfer can be weak or strong. If strong it leaves room to explore for a possible slam. The four level transfer denies interest in a slam.

Examples:

2 Level = S. AKxxxx 4 Level = S. AKxxxx
  H. KQx   H. Kxx
  D. xx   D. xx
  C. KJ   C. xx

MISS BRIDGE MANNERS

By Joanne Weingold

When It Stops Being Fun - When bridge stops being fun, stop playing! Everyone is so concerned about winning in bridge, that sometimes we forget that it’s supposed to be fun. And yet if we take a look around the room, very few players actually seem to be enjoying themselves! So let’s not forget to smile and laugh sometimes (even at ourselves!) After all, much as we hate to hear it said, it is just a game!

(Editor's note - We are a friendly club - Greet your opponents with a hello as you go to the next table - and please adhere to Guidelines for Duplicate Bridge Players at Boca West.)

ABOUT OUR GAME

* It's not enough to win the tricks that belong to you. Try also to win some that belong to the opponents.
* October 13 is our first Sunday game of the season - Extra masterpoints. Please try to attend.
* Letters to the editor - We welcome your input and suggestions, and letters to the editor are welcome.

Do you know the difference between a REVOKE and a RENEGE? Naomi Kanter cleared this up for us. If you fail to follow suit when you could have - whether you trump or win, or discard and gained nothing - you have committed an infraction called a REVOKE. Many incorrectly refer to this as a RENEGE - there is no such term in bridge as a renege.

* HALLOWEEN NIGHT - This year our duplicate game falls on October 31. We are requesting all players wear a "touch of orange or black". Please be a sport and join the fun.

* THANK YOU TO OUR DIRECTOR - We would like to thank Linda Green, for all she does to make our games run smoothly and on time.

* Need a partner? Call Patti Greiff at 488-2887.
